Liberec is the 6th largest city in the Czech region of Bohemia and is situated within a few kilometres of the German and Polish borders. This busy town offers tourists a wide range of history and architecture, together with with modern culture, sports, entertainment and good food!
Liberec offers many interesting tourist sites within its boundaries. The dominant feature is the Town Hall (Radnice), presiding over the main square.
The oldest zoo in the Czech Republic is just a few minutes tram ride from Liberec city centre, this fine attraction offers a great day out and an oppotunity to see the very rare white tigers that are housed there.
The extensive botanical gardens – just minutes away form the zoo contains hundreds of plants from all over the world, including a large number of orchids and cacti.
Local food is good and very cheap compared to other places in the EuroZone. Beer drinkers will think they have found paradise too, since the Czech people seem to have an enduring love affair with the brewing industry! – almost every town has it’s own local brewery and there are numerous varieties sold in the many bars and cafes in the town. Prices of all alcoholic drinks are cheap compared to the UK.
Travel from the UK involves a flight to either Prague or Dresden followed by a road trip of around 1 1/2 hours. From Prague it is possible to take a coach direct from Cerny Most train station.
From Dresden, Germany, a DB train brings passengers directly to Liberec.
Most places of interest in Liberec are within walking distance of one another, although the steep hills on which the town lies can challenge someone who is not accustomed to walking uphill nearly everywhere they go. However, there is a reliable bus and tram system that is affordable and reliable.
